Birth + Labor Support

Women have been surrounded by their tribe during pregnancy and childbirth for thousands of years. But recently, the trappings of modern life overwhelmed this celebratory ritual and coming together of community. A casualty of this neglect has been the mother’s well-being during childbirth. Not only are our tribes now disparate, but childbirth has been reduced to a baby shower, a pre-scheduled trip to the clinic, and a congratulatory text message. That doesn’t cut it.

In my practice, I offer support to women and their partners before, during and after childbirth. My role is to help facilitate safe, positive and empowering birthing experiences by offering information, emotional support and physical support needed during this time. In our prenatal visit, we discuss your birth goals and preferences, comfort techniques, and specifics about how a doula can best be utilized. During labor and birth, I am by your side with positive energy, judgement-free support, and as your advocate and representative. Your body, your birth story. My goal is to protect that space and facilitate a joyful experience and a fulfilling memory.

Studies have shown that women who have a birth doula with them during labor and childbirth have shorter labors, are less likely to request pain medications, are less likely to have emergency cesarean sections and are more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience.

In colonial America, the postpartum stage was referred to as the “lie in” period. A new mother's female community took care of household chores, allowing the mother uninterrupted rest, healing, and bonding time with her baby. Sadly this postpartum ritual is a stark contrast to the back-to-business culture of today, where a new mother is expected to quickly bounce back to her per-pregnancy body, mind and busy schedule. It is my goal to hold space for you during this transition and help navigate new challenges and emotions as they rise.

What you can expect from me: birth processing, basic lactation support, newborn care, massage, household organization, light cleaning including laundry, light food prep (postpartum meal services available for additional fee), running errands, caring for baby while you: sleep, shower, take time for yourself in any way, reminders for self-care, necessary referrals and partner check-in.

Studies have shown that women who have social support during the postpartum period tend to have less postpartum depression, breastfeed for a longer duration and make a better adjustment to parenthood overall.

Examples of care in postpartum shifts include: birth processing, basic lactation support, newborn care, massage, household organization, light cleaning including laundry, light food prep (postpartum meal services available for additional fee), running errands, caring for baby while you: sleep, shower, take time for yourself in any way, reminders for self-care, necessary referrals and partner check-in.
